Richard A. Kaplan *

Rick Kaplan was born in Washington, D.C. and is a graduate of the George Washington University, Harvard Business School (M.B.A. with distinction), and the University of Minnesota Law School (J.D. cum laude), where he was awarded Order of the Coif and served as president of the law review. After law school, he served as law clerk to William B. Bryant, then Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia; and to David L. Bazelon, then Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He later served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he personally tried dozens of criminal cases before juries and judges.

In private practice over the last 20 years, Mr. Kaplan has focused on complex civil litigation, arbitration, and counseling clients with respect to regulatory compliance under federal and state statutes including ERISA and RESPA and various consumer fraud and deceptive practices acts. He brings to his legal practice a unique blend of experience in both business and law. He has spent time as a corporate executive for Dayton Hudson (now Target) and B. Dalton Booksellers, and has owned and operated small manufacturing and distribution businesses. He has also represented small businesses and individuals as well as major corporations such as American Airlines, Ceridian Corporation, 3M, Honeywell, and G.E. Capital Corporation and several of its subsidiaries.

* Mr. Kaplan is a member of the complex commercial case panel of the American Arbitration Association and of the bars of Minnesota and the District of Columbia, as well as numerous federal courts including the Supreme Court of the United States. He is not yet, however, a member of the Utah State Bar.
